Marc and his Patagonia

Dear readers, Marc Sutton, pulling it off.

Special thanks to those of you who e-mailed us to participate ! We should have something good in the end with all these point of views gathered together. I didn’t have to go very far to find Marc Sutton though, he writes our Fourchette column when he has time on his hands.

Hi Marc, what is this jacket ?

This is a vintage Patagonia fleece jacket. I didn’t get it checked by an expert to determine its year of production yet.

Where does it come from ? Do you know its story ?

It is from Seoul, I bought it on Ebay last winter. I would have loved to tell you a particular story, that it was worn by a Scottish mountaineer climbing moutains for pleasure.

Did you live something particular with this jacket ?

In fact I have two stories. As you can see on the pictures, this jacket seems to have been made from shearling. So, when I wore it in cold January nights, a lot of people let themselves fall into my arms.

The other story is more about the use, each time I leave it at the dry cleaner’s, the person systematically tells me that I was wearing it inside out.

Layering 101.

What is it about it that you like so much ?

What is very important to me is all the useful features it brings me. It’s very light, very warm and can stop powerful and penetrating winds. I’m still amazed by the light weight of this jacket in regards to its exceptional climatics perfomances. It’s very important to know that Patagonia makes each garment by studying the needs of mountaineers in extreme conditions and by working with them to create items. These garments are made to resist exceptional weather conditions and to maintain the well being of its wearer in the darkest hours of a hardcore trekking trip.

When I wear it I love to think about all the settings, the tests that Patagonia made to create the best garment possible. When I’m outside in the cold for a long time with a lot of wind, I put it on before going to the groceries or Sunday flea markets.

What are you looking for in clothing in general ?

It’s a mix of feelings but first I’m looking for what I need. I love to collect clothing with a story. It can be in the way it was made or in it’s last life. It’s very important that the piece is timeless for two reasons: I don’t want it to be a fashion accessorie but a true classic, that I will be able to wear during all my life and give to my children. I also want to be a part of this garment’s story by wearing it in different circumstances and by mixing it with other garments to create a very personal style.

I bet you can imagine yourself wearing that in a cold winter.

What do you think of fashion in general ?

To talk about brands, I’m allergic to the likes of H&M, Zara. All these companies making bad quality clothing and twisting classics with bad materials and false details.

I don’t really care about fashion. My inspiration comes mostly by reading articles online or fashion magazines but also in the streets by looking at elderly people.

Which brand interested you recently ?

There is a lot of them. I can mention Haversack for example: I discovered it on my last Tokyo trip. Everything is made by hand with high end materials. They seek their influence in traditional workwear and militarywear. Of course they rethought the cuts. I also love the fact that they put some pieces which are exterior to this utilitary universe like a polka dot silk scarf that I bought. I love the fact that their garments are timeless and that they associate classic styles from different universes.

Technical lining, built to resist, to be warm, to be light. And to be red.

For you, is the “brand” concept important ? what are you looking for in a brand ?

It’s not my priority, when I buy a garment it’s because I’m looking for a particular piece. But I like a lot of brands and if they decide to make what I’m looking for it’s better.

In a brands’ work I’m look for well made products, an ethical process, a craftsmen know-how and limited editions to get this feeling of owning something rare. I also need to be suprised, to see them renew themselves without getting caught by fashion but by staying true to their DNA.

Thank you Marc !
