Georges Bizet – Jeux d’enfants

Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet is one of those countless artists for which history has remembered only a unique work. Unfortunately, for members of this sad circle, it is often a terrible injustice, as the value of their other creations is just as important.

Bizet is no exception to the rule. Mainly known for being the composer of the most famous French opera, the rest of his work is often overlooked.

If Carmen can probably be considered as Bizet’s masterpiece, it is far too simplistic to sum up the composer to this single partition.

Its Suite of 12 movements, “Jeux d’enfants”, composed in 1871 for piano is the perfect example. Bizet orchestrated five of these 12 pieces and incorporated them into the Suite created March 2, 1873 at the Odeon, in Paris, by the National Concert under the direction of Edward Column.

And of course, not reducing Bizet to Carmen doesn’t mean we shouldn’t treat ourselves a little bit!
