Adam et Ropé – Biotop, Tokyo

All of the shop’s architecture is organized around this tree, a true symbol of the shop

Amongst the main Japanese retailers that we know of in Europe, Beams and United Arrows would probably come first. Especially Beams that has started to install itself more comfortably in Europe with its Beams Plus ligne that is already available in the UK at shops like Oi Polloi, Mr Porter, Present and others.

Adam et Ropé is also one of the big players in Japanese fashion but operates in a different way than its competitors by concentrating more on smaller retailing spaces, offering a clothing selection that is more focused around the concept of the shop and therefore on the needs and wants of its clientele. In fact, the group prefers to keep “human” sized shops in order to favor the contact with the client and deliver a better service rather that giving into the big and impersonal format. Each boutique has its own concept giving the client the opportunity to find products that corresponds to what he is looking for.

The table in the entry of the shop allows to highlight the current collaborations that are taking place. Here is an example of the one with the Starnet brand that we will telling you more of very soon.

The flagship of the brand is called Biotop and its concept, as its name may suggest, is very focused on the environment and sustainability. A Biotop being a homogenous environment that fosters the life of a group of plant or  animals. This is illustrated as soon as you cross the front door by the presence of a tree around which all the architecture of the shop is articulated, as well as the florist present in the shop that offers a luxurious selection of plants that can also be found all around the shop.

In addition to offering a wide selection of beauty and cleaning products as well as perfumes, most of which are organic of course, the retailer also has a “shop-in-shop” from the renown Japanese florist Fuga featuring plants carefully selected by Adam et Ropé’s creative director: Takashi Kumagai.

Takashi Kumagai is also the one behind the Biotop concept that supervises the selection of products as well as the merchandising. As a matter of fact, 1% of the turnover of the shop is donated to the Japanese association More Trees that aims to replant trees in Japan’s forests.

Specialized washing products for each type of fabric, great isn’t it?

On the second floor, you will find the clothing selection for men and women. Amongst the selected brands features a few that we already told you about here such as Umit Benan, Adam Kimmel for Carharrt, Wolverine 1000 miles, and also others like Saturday’s Surf NYC, Patrik Evrell, without forgetting the Adam et Ropé product range.

To finish the tour, on the third floor is the “Irving Place” restaurant, directed by the chef Uichi Yamamoto that follows the same directive than the shop’s concept by offering a selection of healthy dishes and other organic products, all of it located in a calm and relaxing environnement.

A little look at the Irvin place, located at the third floor of Biotop

If you have been following a little our adventures, you may know that it is here that La Belle Echoppe has had the chance to open a corner store, at the first floor of the shop. Surrounded by plants and in very good company, we couldn’t have wished for more. Please to not hesitate to comme have a look on our website if you wish to know more about it.

Before leaving the shop, do not miss the chance to take a look at the treehouse located at the back of the store. You don’t come across a lot of those, even in Japan!

If you happen to be stopping by Tokyo, seize the opportunity to stop by Biotop to live the full experience. It is a lot different to what can be seen in Europe. We will be back soon with other finds from Japan and leave you with a few extra pictures.
